Where to buy the finest Hunter drops

THE 2012 Hunter Valley Wine Show produced some brilliant trophy and gold-medal wines and a majority of them are available at prices from $12 to $500 a bottle.

Wines that won 18 of the 20 trophies awarded can be bought now at Hunter wine country cellar doors, in wine stores and online.

The red and white champion wines, the De Iuliis 2011 Steven Vineyard Shiraz and the Meerea Park 2006 Terracotta Semillon, are both available.

The 2011 Steven Shiraz sells for $40 at the De Iuliis Broke Road, Pokolbin, winery or on dewine.com.au. It won four trophies: the Doug Seabrook Trophy for best dry red of show, the Alexander Munro Trophy for best one-year-old dry red, the Drayton Family Trophy for best named vineyard dry red and the Hector Tulloch Trophy for the best currently available dry red.

It scored the 56-point top gold in named vineyard 2011 shiraz dry red class to add to two gold medals won by other reds from the De Iuliis wine company.

The Eather clan’s 2006 Terracotta Semillon won four trophies – the Petrie-Drinan Trophy for best dry white of show, the Len Evans Trophy for best named vineyard wine, the Tyrrell Family Trophy for best named vineyard dry white and the Maurice O’Shea Trophy for best currently available dry white.

It can be bought for $30 at the Meerea Park cellar door in Broke Road, Pokolbin, at Vintage Cellars in Darby Street, Newcastle, or on meereapark.com.au.

Made by Rhys Eather from grapes from the Howard family’s Somerset vineyard in Oakey Creek Road, Pokolbin, the wine scored 57 points and was top gold in the named vineyard 2011 and older semillon dry white class.

It was one of only three wines to get 57 points out of a possible 60 from the Hunter judging panel chaired for the first time by Pepper Tree chief winemaker Jim Chatto.

The other 57-point wines were the $100 Tempus Two 2003 Copper Zenith Semillon and the Tyrrell’s 2009 Vat 8 Shiraz Cabernet.

The 2009 Vat 8 Shiraz Cabernet, which sells for $90 at Tyrrell’s Broke Road, Pokolbin, cellar door, in wine stores and on tyrrells.com.au, won the James Busby Trophy for best premium dry red and was top gold in 2010 and older shiraz dry red class. It is reviewed today in Wine List.

As it often does, the Tyrrell’s family wine company dominated the prize list with 13 gold medals.

It also won six trophies, including the Bill Ryan Trophy for the most successful exhibitor of young wines and the inaugural Iain Riggs white and red wines of provenance awards.

The Riggs awards require entrants to submit three different vintages of the same labelled wine, covering a vintage spread of at least 10 years, with one wine being 2009 vintage or younger.

Tyrrell’s won the white prize with the 1999, 2006 and 2009 Vat 1 semillons and the reds award with the 1996, 2006 and 2009 Vat 9 shiraz wines.

The 2009 Vat 9 Shiraz sells for $90 a bottle and the 2006 Vat 1 Semillon for $65 at Tyrrell’s Broke Road, Pokolbin, cellar door, in wine stores and on tyrrells.com.au.
