Newcastle police investigating three overnight robberies

NEWCASTLE police are investigating three robberies overnight, including one where a gun was pointed at a victim with a threat of shooting him.

A police dog has found evidence relating to the horrifying hold-up at Strzelecki Lookout after the 50-year-old victim was awoken in his car to two men tapping on his window.

After winding the window down, the man was threatened with a knife before a second thief pulled out a handgun after claiming the victim was stalling.

‘‘Hurry up or I will shoot you,’’ the gunman is reported to have said to the victim.

They left with several hundred dollars and a mobile phone.

The incident occurred about 11.20pm.

Earlier, a man was bashed and several hundred dollars stolen from him during a robbery near a bus stop on Union Street, Merewether, about 5.45pm.

And a man attempted to withdraw money from an automatic teller machine at Hamilton was threatened by two men, who stole his cash, about 12.45am.

They were last seen running from the Beaumont Street ATM towards Tudor Street.
