John Martin is Singleton's new mayor

IN A final twist in the tustle for the position of Singleton mayor, long-serving councillor John Martin has been elected after the distributions of preferences.

Cr Martin, 77, was first elected as a Singleton councillor in 1965 and as mayor in 1999.

‘‘At my age I’ve done well to be elected as a councillor let alone mayor,’’ Cr Martin said yesterday.

His election rival Kylie Stibbard paid tribute to her fellow contender, saying Cr Martin is a true ‘‘Singleton local’’ and someone people can trust.

Ms Stibbard said there were only 118 votes between the two after preferences.

‘‘I am thrilled Singleton has John as mayor,’’ she said

Cr Martin said he didn’t mind people thinking he was ‘‘old fashioned’’.

‘‘They are looking for experience and credibility, someone who is stable,’’ Cr Martin said.

He said several big projects needed completion, including the redevelopment of Singleton’s CBD and management of traffic.

Cr Martin said he was dreadfully upset over this week’s fatal collision in Singleton of a heavy vehicle and a school bus which killed a schoolboy Harry Dunn,9.

‘‘We have to work through it.

‘‘I am meeting with the general manager [Lindy Hyam] to get the results of her discussions with Roads and Maritime Services,’’ Cr Martin said.
