BRUCE MacKenzie has won Port Stephens’ mayoral race after days of close counting.
Cr MacKenzie had been locked in a tight contest for the role with Geoff Dingle, who is almost certain to return as a Central Ward councillor.
The result was announced this afternoon following a preference count, with the primary vote too close to call.
A Port Stephens Council spokeswoman confirmed Cr MacKenzie had reclaimed the top job by a final margin of 884 votes.
More in tomorrow’s Newcastle Herald.
