Cessnock supermarket attack: Language warning

A MAN attacking and abusing what appears to be a store manager in Coles Cessnock has been caught on video taken on a smartphone.

The video attracted more than 24,000 views on Facebook by Sunday night.

A witness said the incident happened  about midday on Saturday.

The video shows the offender threatening to kill a man and grabbing him around the neck. The witness said the victim was a store manager. 

The person recording the video  can be heard telling someone to ‘‘call the police’’.

‘‘It was awful,’’ the witness said. ‘‘It was a really confronting scene – so violent.’’

The witness said the victim was ‘‘obviously shaken’’.

‘‘I was shaken and I’m glad my kids weren’t there, but there were lots of kids around,’’ the witness said. 

The video was sent to police.

On Monday police issued a statement confirming Central Hunter police are examining the incident and appealing for help identifying the man involved.

The man is described as aged in his 30s, standing 170cm to 173cm tall.

He has a slim built, short light brown hair and was wearing a black cap at the time of the incident.

Coles declined to comment.
