SHAKEN staff of Windale Gateshead Bowling Club were making a quiet recovery yesterday after four armed intruders tied up the workers and ransacked the premises.
Five staff were inside the club after closing about 10.30pm on Thursday.
Police said four people entered through a window.
One was armed with what was believed to be a knife, another with a baton and a third with a metal bar.
The intruders rounded up the five victims and bound their hands and feet.
The robbers moved through the club to the safe and tills and stole cash.
They fled with a large sum of money and escaped in a red Commodore sedan.
The intruders were wearing dark clothing and had their faces covered, one with a mask and another with a red patterned cloth.
The premises were in lock-down for most of yesterday morning as police examined the scene.
Club chief executive officer Wendy Smith said none of the staff were injured.
They were all doing fine yesterday, she said.
Visibly shaken staff and members gathered outside the club as police were inside.
