NEWCASTLE cemented its status as a rugby league city at the weekend, with more viewers tuning in to watch the NRL grand final than any other sporting event.
An average of 187,400 viewers in the Newcastle region watched Melbourne defeat Canterbury on NBN on Sunday, easily topping the night’s ratings.
About 105,900 people tuned in to Prime7 on Saturday to witness the Sydney Swans take home the AFL trophy. It was also the most popular program for that day.
When it comes to footy finals weekend, Newcastle has bucked the national trend for the second year in a row.
The AFL grand final attracts much larger audiences across the country than the NRL but this is not the case in Newcastle.
The AFL grand final presentation pulled an audience of 3.196 million viewers across Australia’s capital cities, almost 800,000 more than the NRL grand final presentation.
Nationally, the AFL grand final was the best rating one-off sports event so far for 2012, outstripping the third State Of Origin match between NSW and Queensland, which attracted 2.694 million viewers.
