WHEN receptionists ask 86-year-old Joyce Barry whether she is Miss or Mrs Barry she proudly replies: "It's Doctor Barry, actually."
The Wamberal great-grandmother is among more than 1000 students who will graduate from the University of Newcastle Callaghan Campus today and tomorrow.
Dr Barry has a Bachelor of Arts with honours and a masters and will tomorrow collect her doctorate in English literature.
It is the end of a 27-year journey for the mother of six who undertook a university course because her sewing class was too easy.
Dr Barry was offered a private school scholarship at age 11 but when the war began she had to leave London and go to Wales.
Dr Barry said she felt guilty taking a place from a young person but a lecturer convinced her that universities were open to everyone.
"I loved education so much I just kept going," she said.
