Cessnock IGA hit in ram raid

A RAM raid is believed to have caused about $30,000 in damage to a Cessnock supermarket and bottleshop this morning.

Police said a maroon four-wheel drive stopped outside the Ritchie’s IGA and Liquor Store on Wollombi Road about 3.30am.

After reversing the vehicle into the bollard, one of the ram raiders then got out to loosen the obstruction enough to get the car past.

It was then reversed through a front glass window four times, destroying it.

Two men went into the shop and unsuccessfully attempted to force open the locked metal cigarette cabinet.

The pair then left in the car alongside two men on white dirt bikes.

A crime scene was established and forensic officers are examining the scene.

Detectives are investigating the incident and would like to speak to two men who may be able to assist with their inquiries.

Police said one of the men man was wearing a dark coloured hooded jacket, blue jeans, and had his face concealed at the time.

The other man was wearing a fluorescent yellow jacket and a motorcycle helmet during the incident.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
