Man dies in Nelsons Plains crash

A man has died after his utility ran off the road and struck a power pole at Nelsons Plains in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Emergency services arrived at Seaham Road near the Noongah Road intersection to find the driver of the vehicle deceased at the scene.

It took several hours to release his body from the car and isolate the cracked power pole.

Ausgrid crews were still working to restore power to nearby homes at lunch time on Sunday.

A Seaham Road resident told Fairfax Media he and his wife were awoken by “a hell of noise” just before 2.30am.

The resident, who asked not to be named, said other nearby residents also heard the crash and called triple zero.

He said the side of the ute had been severely damaged in the accident.

“It’s just a tragedy,” he said.

A report will be prepared for the coroner but investigators were still working to formally identify the man on Sunday.

His death takes the Hunter’s road toll to 41 since the beginning of the year.
