Duncan claims singles crown

Alder Park’s Jarrod Duncan achieved a career high by winning the Newcastle District Champion of Club Champions Singles Championship on Sunday.

In a thrilling final at Water Board, 29-year-old Duncan beat former St Johns Park player Lee Such (Soldiers Point) 31-27 over 36 ends. Trailing by three on the final end, Such held three shots before Duncan played the perfect draw to clinch victory.

** The Newcastle team of Shaun Richards, Adrian Solomons, Haydn Bojkowski, James Broderick, Jesse Herbert and Nick Evans won the Under-25 Challenge at Raymond Terrace last weekend on 56 points (plus 130 shots) from Central Northern on 51.

** Bar Beach’s Simon Jones and Ken Shelswell won the Newcastle section of the Bowls NSW Rookies Pairs, beating Peter Schremmer and Scott Rainbow (Raymond Terrace) 12-9 in the final at Lambton.

They will join singles winner Corey Atkins (Charlestown) in the state play-offs at Raymond Terrace on October 8 and 9.

** No.1 Grade Three Threes titleholders Raymond Terrace maintained their unbeaten record this year with an impressive 86-52 victory over previously undefeated Valentine. Kahibah No.1 also stayed unbeaten by downing Belmont 72-65.

** The District Champion of Clubs Champions Pairs start on Saturday at Lambton and Hamilton North.

** Wallsend Sporties have vacancies for their men’s 11-up Triples on Monday, October 3.
