Child Abuse Squad Newcastle detectives charge Lake Macquarie man over indecent assault of girl, 11, off George Booth Drive

A LAKE Macquarie man has been arrested over the indecent assault of an 11-year-old girl he had allegedly picked up on the side of a busy road before attacking her.

Some information from the public prompted Child Abuse Squad Newcastle detectives to investigate the 36-year-old suspect, and he was charged at Belmont police station on Thursday with one count of aggravated indecent assault.

He was refused bail to appear in Belmont Local Court on Friday.

It followed a month-long manhunt for the suspect, after the girl told investigators she was coerced into a car by a motorist as she stood next to George Booth Drive at West Wallsend on August 22.

It is alleged the girl was taken to Richmond Vale where she was assaulted as the four-wheel drive was parked off George Booth Drive.

The girl was able to escape her attacker’s clutches and raised the alarm after another motorist stopped nearby.

A search failed to find any trace of the man or his car before some information from the public prompted an in-depth investigation which led to the suspect’s arrest.
