Jets chief executive Lawrie McKinna says the club’s new five-year contract to rent Hunter Stadium is proof of Martin Lee’s long-term commitment to Newcastle.
Previous owners Football Federation Australia had a one-year contract to lease the ground, now known as McDonald Jones Stadium.
“Signing the five-year deal just adds on that stability that the club’s going to be here for the long-term, and the Ledman Group’s and Martin Lee’s very pleased to be signing the five-year deal,” McKinna said on Thursday.
“This is just another step. It would have been easy to sign another one-year deal or two-year deal, but Martin Lee was keen to get a five-year deal done.”
McKinna also said he had spoken to agents about big European clubs “tagging on” Newcastle at the end of their off-season Australian tours.
And he said the Ledman Group could leverage its sponsorship ties with the Chinese FA to help bring China’s national team to Newcastle to play the Socceroos.
