LAKE Macquarie cliff diver Rhiannan Iffland will be hoping to nail the Red Bull cliff-diving world title when she competes at Shirahama, Japan, this weekend.
Iffland, competing as a wildcard rookie, has won three events this season and holds a 90-point lead over her closest competitor, Canada’s Lysanne Richard.
A win in Japan, the penultimate stop of the tour before the finale in Dubai, might be enough for Iffland to secure the title.
The 24-year-old from Nords Wharf, who learned to dive in Lambton Pool, has featured on the podium in all five events this season, finishing runner-up to Richard in the last contest, in Bosnia, despite a groin injury.
At the Japanese event, divers will launch themselves from a cliff that towers over the Pacific Ocean along the coast of Shirahama Town, Wakayama Prefecture.
It is the only all-natural setting on the tour, with no man-made platform from which divers launch themselves.
