REVIEW: Jagwar Ma - Every Now & Then - 3 stars

SAFE: Jagwar Ma have played to their strengths of album No.2.

SAFE: Jagwar Ma have played to their strengths of album No.2.

JAGWAR Ma had that knack in 2013 of attracting both rock and dance fans to their debut Howlin. The Madchester-inspired beats, melodic harmonies and psychedelia sounded both nostalgic and modern. It resulted in the Sydney dance act achieving mass success in the UK.

Album No.2 Every Now & Then feels safe in comparison to Howlin and is certainly more guitar driven. Instead of experimentation, Jagwar Ma have refined their strengths. Vocalist Gabriel Winterfield’s feel for melodic hooks remains on the funky Loose Ends and the poppy Give Me A Reason, which positions itself between ‘80s Prince and ‘90s rave, and lead single O B 1 is pure pop pleasure. The best of Jagwar Ma is still coming. Every Now & Then is all about consolidation of their sound.
