SOME of Australia’s top dancers have twirled onto the region’s stage this week as part of a national tour of regional cities.
The Australian Ballet begins a two-night showcase of classic ballet Giselle at the Civic Theatre on Wednesday night, with a second performance scheduled Thursday evening.
The cast includes 25 dancers, a mix of Australian Ballet artists and new Australian Ballet School graduates.
Karen Nanasca plays the titular role.
The two-act ballet was first performed in Paris in 1841. It tells the story of a village girl’s love for a man who is not all he seems.
She becomes a spirit after dying of a broken heart, ultimately reuniting with her lover in a forest haunted by the ghosts of jilted women.
Giselle is forced to dance with him until dawn in a bid to save his life.
The Australian Ballet will perform at the Civic Theatre at 7.30pm on October 18 and 19.
It is the final performance of a regional tour that also took in Orange, Bendigo, Wagga Wagga and Geelong.
