Islington man declines bail in shooting case

A third man accused of taking part in a Tighes Hill shooting remained in custody today after he declined to apply for bail.

William John Richards, 23, of Fern Street, Islington, appeared briefly in Newcastle Local Court today after he was arrested on Wednesday morning and charged with shooting with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He is accused of being part of a group of men that entered a Tighes Hill home on June 28 before a man was shot through a bathroom door.

The bullet passed through the victim’s chest, but his injuries were not life threatening.

Mr Richards was the third person charged over the shooting with two co-accused facing court on Wednesday.

The trio will face court again next month.

As well as the shooting, Mr Richards was also charged with aggravated break and enter, possessing a shortened firearm and possessing ammunition.

He did not enter pleas.
