A FOUR-WHEEL-DRIVE was attempting to climb a ‘‘very steep’’ hill on a dirt track in Muswellbrook when it rolled and killed a passenger, police said.
The red Jeep Wrangler was being driven in an area known as ‘‘the commons’’ off Coal Road, Muswellbrook.
‘‘They try and get to the top of the hill,’’ a police spokesman said. ‘‘It’s a popular activity, but it’s got to a stage where four-wheel-drives can’t get up the hill.
‘‘It’s more motorbikes, but these guys thought they could do it.’’
Police said a 29-year-old male passenger was thrown from the vehicle when it rolled at about 6.45pm on Friday. He suffered critical head and chest injuries.
Police were not sure if the passenger was wearing a seatbelt.
The spokesman said the vehicle rolled a long way.
‘‘He’s been ejected out of the vehicle and it has gone over the top of him,’’ he said.
