During his illustrious career as an auctioneer, Anthony Merlo has put countless homes under the hammer.
But it will be someone else holding the gavel when his prized residence on Bruce Street in Cooks Hill sells next month.
“I think we’ll have to hold him back,” his wife Alison admitted with a laugh.
The origins of the stylish Erin Maddison designed home date back to 2010, when the couple purchased the dilapidated cottage next door on a large block with a 21 metre frontage. They subdivided the land and put their “heart and soul” into the construction of their luxury home.
“In a heritage conservation area such as Cooks Hill, it is almost impossible to construct a new Torrens Titled residence so we feel very fortunate,” Mr Merlo said.
There has been impeccable attention to detail in the construction – from the magnificent joinery by Nadin West to an Ipad-controlled audio visual system throughout. The pair host guests in an alfresco entertaining area fitted with a fully-integrated barbecue and bar fridge.
While smart and modern, it could not be said that the home lacks character. The couple have left their own stamp with a Japanese-inspired outdoor courtyard, a stunning glassed-in garden feature wall in the kitchen and vintage cabinetry they sourced themselves in the bathrooms.
The couple have been long-term residents of Cooks Hill and said they had fallen in love with the suburb for its coffee shops, restaurants and access to the beaches and the harbour. They will be taking advantage of ‘another opportunity’ that has presented itself nearby in 2017.
