THE NSW government has awarded a $666,000 contract to dredge a sand shoal in Swansea Channel next month.

Contractor Sandpiper Dredging will be tasked with reducing shoaling that has formed in the navigation channel between the south entrance to Swan Bay and the drop over into Lake Macquarie.

The dredge will operate before Christmas and after the school holidays to remove sand from the shoal in the channel opposite the Pelican airstrip, Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald said.

“The dredging is necessary to ensure the ongoing safety, utility and enjoyment of the channel and its surroundings,” Mr MacDonald said.
