RECOGNITION: Areas of Soldiers Point will be gazetted as an Aboriginal Place.

THE Worimi Local Aboriginal Land Council will host a celebration in Spencer Park, Soldiers Point on Saturday to mark the recognition of land in Soldiers Point as an Aboriginal Place.

The celebration will run from 10am to 2pm and include rides, food and entertainment, and the chance to learn about the area’s Aboriginal heritage, land council chief executive Andrew Smith said.

Some areas of Soldier’s Point – known as Thou Walla in Gatung language – are being gazetted in accordance with their meaning to Worimi people following a 35-year campaign.

In July, the NSW government declared almost six hectares of land in Soldiers Point an Aboriginal Place.
