MICHAEL Formosa was eyeing the lead with Ultimate Art in his crunch Perth Inter Dominion heat (2536 metres) from gate five on Friday night at Gloucester Park.
Ultimate Art was third at Bunbury on Tuesday night in the second of three rounds of heats to make the 10-horse decider on December 9. It lifted the Ellalong-trained entire to 12th in the rankings. He then drew the only heat with eight runners, instead of nine, and the race not featuring series favourites Lennytheshark and Hectorjayjay.
“The less numbers the better,” Formosa said. “I was sort of lucky. I got the two hard heats the first two, and the easier one the last one.”
He believed Ultimate Art needed a top-two finish and could rival Smolda (gate three) for the lead on Friday.
