House of the week: 16 Charlton Street, Eleebana

When this grand Tudor-style home at Eleebana last went under the hammer in 2014, Nick Crow was tied up with work commitments.

But his wife Janette attended the auction – and couldn’t help herself once the bidding had begun.

“I went ahead and bought it. It was a bit naughty,” she laughs. “It’s a really special house. It’s just got that wow factor.”

The architecturally designed four-bedroom home was built around 28 years ago by a well-known local GP and her partner. The degree of workmanship and attention to detail the pair of collectors put into the task was “unbelievable”, Ms Crow said.

Antique poles sourced from Morpeth support the elegant circular stairwell, which is wrapped with exposed brick and arched lattice windows.

An indoor fishpond is populated with Japanese koi, while the home also features a wine cellar, a brass fireplace, marble bathrooms, chandeliers, a home theatre room, a spa room and a sauna.

The kitchen has been fitted with Smeg stainless steel appliances. Outdoors there is a pool, a barbecue area with a pizza oven, a fully self-contained granny flat and nearly half-an-acre of grounds peppered with mango, plum and mandarin trees.

The property is nestled among other prestige homes on Charlton Street, within a short stroll to the lake.

The couple’s adult children have lived in the granny flat but it could also suit elderly parents or relatives. It would break her heart to leave, Ms Crow said, but the couple found another opportunity “too good to pass up” within the region.
