THE mindless destruction of a much-loved community book exchange in the heart of Newcastle has left users and creators devastated.

The hub, a creation between the Newcastle Writers Festival, Newcastle City Council and Newcastle Region Library, was designed by local Stu Pinkerton and had stood proud in Wheeler Place for two years.

But authorities are now investigating whether its destruction was at the hand of vandals or the work of a wayward truck driver.

“So much work was put into creating this, it has generated so much community goodwill and to see someone show such little respect is heartbreaking,’’ writers festival director Rosemarie Milsom said.

“It is not as easy as just bashing a few nails in to fix it either. It is really sad that someone could do this.’’
