A plan for 30 affordable housing units on the former heavy rail corridor will hinge on the outcome of a vote at Wednesday’s Newcastle Council meeting.
Councillors will decide whether to help the Hunter Development Corporation (HDC) carry the cost of the development by contributing $3 million of residual money from a state and federal government fund called Building Better Cities.
The land, west of Merewether Street, is understood to be worth about $1 million. If council agrees to help fund the project, HDC will run an expressions of interest campaign to find a community housing provider to manage the facility. It would also be contingent on DA approval from council and the favourable rezoning of the rail corridor.
The Herald reported this week that the housing would be designed for “key workers” including police, nurses and teachers.
