IT'S been a long time coming but the old and crumbling Blue Track is finally gone.
In its place is the new and improved track that both Newcastle and the city's athletics community is bound to be proud of.
The upgrade of the Fearnley Dawes Athletic Centre hit a new milestone on Friday, as workers gave the track the lick of blue paint that gives rise to its name.
The finishing touches come before the track’s official opening next month, with the spray paint work expected to be completed over the weekend.
The upgrade began in November after the state government agreed to fund the $800,000 project.
The new track has six lanes and a firmer outside lane on which wheelchair athletes can train. It cost $2 extra per square metre to give the track its distinctive blue colour.
