DAVID Beckham fans got a glimpse of their idol from behind a fence at Newcastle Airport today, but they didn’t get a wave.
‘‘You’d think a little wave wouldn’t be too hard, wouldn’t you,’’ said a Thornton fan called Lisa, who was the first to arrive at the fence at 9.30am to greet the star and his LA Galaxy team-mates for their match against the Newcastle Jets on Saturday.
‘‘I came here to see Becks because he’s a good footballer, and because I can’t see him on Saturday because my work Christmas party is on, but I would have liked a wave,’’ said Lisa.

About 50 people waited behind the fence to see the plane land at Newcastle and players, including Beckham, walk about 100 metres to a waiting bus to be driven to the Crowne Plaza in Newcastle.
About 20 diehard fans made the trip to see the star. The rest were airport workers or people waiting to pick up family members from other flights.
‘‘I thought I may as well wait out here and see Beckham, rather than wait inside,’’ said a woman called Jenny.
Beckham shook hands with Newcastle Jets captain Michael Bridges and Minister for the Hunter Jodi McKay before heading straight for the team bus.
Newcastle Jets captain Michael Bridges said there is a buzz around the city ahead of the match.
‘‘It’s been the talk of the town for weeks and weeks,’’ he said.
