Player of the tournament Rory Walker has led Newcastle under 18s to a state title on home turf in his last junior representative competition.

The skipper scored a double in Sunday’s 4-1 final win over Sydney East at Newcastle International Hockey Centre to cap off a dominant display from the striker.

“He definitely deserved it,” Walker’s club coach at Norths and Newcastle Junior Boys Hockey Association president Dave Willott said.

“He played really well and scored a lot of really good goals.”

Newcastle went through the Hockey NSW championships undefeated, but were given a scare in the decider.

The visitors went ahead 1-0 but Walker equalised before the break.

Walker, Ky Willott and Seb Rollings then found the back of the net for Newcastle in the second half.

It is believed to be the first time Newcastle has triumphed in that age group.

Newcastle’s division three side were also victorious.

They beat Nepean 3-0 in Sunday’s final and earn promotion to second division next year.
