THE hunt continues for a motorist who escaped after taking police on two high-speed chases through suburban Newcastle before ramming at least one marked car.

Newcastle City duty officer Inspector Terry Burns said officers in an unmarked police car saw a grey Mazda 3 travelling at an excessive speed along Bull Street at Mayfield about 2.15am on Monday.

The officers attempted to stop the car before the short pursuit was terminated.

Four minutes later, a marked police saw the vehicle and began an eight-minute chase through Tighes Hill, Hamilton South, Newcastle West, Cooks Hill and Adamstown.

The second pursuit was terminated by police after the suspect car ran a red light.

The car was discovered again in an Adamstown cul-de-sac about 2.30am where the driver reversed into a police paddy wagon, causing minor damage, before again escaping.

Inspector Burns said police were closing in on the suspected driver.
