Man charged with impersonating a police officer after allegedly attempting to steal items from Birmingham Gardens unit

A MAN stands accused of wearing a suit to talk his way into a Birmingham Gardens unit as a police officer before attempting to steal items.

Matthew James Corbett, 21, was arrested in Mudgee on Monday following an investigation Newcastle City target action group officers into several complaints from residents.

It is alleged one victim was woken by the knocks on April 21 and opened the door to a suspect who claimed to be a police officer.

He allegedly “tricked” his way unit before attempting to steal items.

Mr Corbett is alleged to have targeted a second unit but was turned away when he could not produce identification.

He was charged two counts of impersonating a police officer, and one count each of impersonating a police officer and exercise power/functions as well as break and enter with intent.

Mr Corbett was refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court on May 23.
