Interdistrict club Cardiff City sprung the upset, beating NPL side Lake Macquarie 2-1, as Edgeworth won the heavyweight battle against Hamilton in round five of the Northern NSW division of the FFA Cup on Wednesday night.
Cardiff City were away to the Roosters and trailed after an early goal from Tom Sparre. The Tigers, who sit seventh in the NNSW third-tier Zone Premier League, responded with goals from Ethan Reay and Mun-Nee Morgan.
Valentine, fourth in the NPL, were almost another casualty. They were 2-2 with ZPL frontrunners Newcastle Suns but scored twice late through Dean Pettit to progress.
At Darling Street Oval, Kieran Sanders scored three goals and set up Edgeworth’s other in a 4-2 win over Hamilton. Sanders scored off a Daniel McBreen ball over the top in the 18th minute and tapped in Bren Hammel’s cross in the 23rd.
Scott Smith got one back for Olympic late in the first half but Sanders restored the advantage in the 73rd minute. Smith headed in a Kane Goodchild cross in the 80th for 3-2 but Sanders teed up Keigo Moriyasu for a header almost immediately for 4-2.
Maitland held off a late surge from Weston to win 3-2 at Cooks Square Park. The Magpies led 3-0 through goals to Shane Cansdell-Sherriff, Jye Mackellar and Ben Martin.
Broadmeadow defeated second-tier New Lambton 3-0 via a double to Scott Pettit and a goal to Kale Bradbery at Alder Park. Lambton Jaffas beat Adamstown 1-0 with a goal in the 79th minute in the remaining game.
