Newcastle police pursuit: Joel Christopher Redman refused bail

A MAN accused of ramming a police car during a pursuit at Kotara during the early hours of Monday morning has been refused bail.

Joel Christopher Redman, 20, appeared in Raymond Terrace Local Court in handcuffs on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to two counts of police pursuit, driving while disqualified and using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention.

But Mr Redman pleaded not guilty to the most serious offence of intimidate police officer in execution of duty as well as stealing a motor vehicle and stealing property.

He did not apply for bail and it was formally refused by Magistrate Caleb Franklin.

Newcastle City police say they attempted to stop a Mazda on Hannell Street at Wickham about 2.15am on Monday.

Police allege the vehicle – which they say was stolen – failed to stop and a pursuit was launched, however it was stopped a short time later due to dangerous driving.

A short time later the Mazda was located on Bullecourt Circuit, Kotara where it allegedly reversed into a police car and sped off.
