Just swimming in the rain

CHURNING out laps at the Newcastle Ocean Baths under a leaden sky might not have been everybody’s idea of fun on Friday.

But for these hardy souls, the ominous clouds and regular showers kept the crowds away and the lanes clear – and that’s likely to be the case for the next two days as well with the Hunter set for a wet weekend.

The weather bureau says there’s a 95 per cent chance of rain across the region on Saturday, with the chance of thunderstorms.

That’s not good news for the expected crowd of more than 20,000 which had been tipped to attend the Lovedale Long Lunch.

But the bureau says the rain should ease on Sunday.

It’s likely to be a wet start to the working week, with rain forecast for Monday before conditions begin to improve on Wednesday.
