Hundreds descend on Morpeth for Million Paws Walk

THEIR paws were made for walking but that's not all they did at the RSPCA's biggest annual fund-raiser at Morpeth yesterday.

More than 500 dogs and close to 1000 people took part in the Million Paws Walk at Morpeth Common, where anything with four legs was a star.

Held to raise money for the RSPCA and animal welfare issues, the walk involved stalls, a band and a series of dog-only contests.

RSPCA Rutherford manager Michelle Renna said the dog fancy dress event was the most popular contest on the day.

"People really pulled out all the stops in all the comps but the fancy dress was the biggest," Ms Renna said.

"We had a dog dressed in a Harley-Davidson outfit, a fairy outfit, a lady bird and the winning dog was dressed as Steve Irwin."

It appeared the amount raised on the day would surpass last year's tally of $8000 but it was not known by how much, Ms Renna said.

"It was a fantastic day and people were so generous."
