Man caught with firearm during breath test: Police

A MAN has been caught with an unregistered gun during a random breath test in Port Stephens, police say.

Just after 2.30am on Saturday, Port Stephens Local Area Command officers were patrolling Shoal Bay Road, Shoal Bay, when they stopped the driver of a Mazda station wagon for the random breath test.

The driver returned a negative result and was then subjected to a search, police said.

Officers allegedly found a metal air pistol on the man, which was taken for forensic analysis.

A 22-year-old man was arrested and taken to Nelson Bay police station where he was charged with possession of an unregistered pistol.

He was granted conditional bail to face Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday, July 10.
