BOATS formed a parade of light on Lake Macquarie during the weekend’s Float Your Boat festival, and organisers are already confident it will become a calendar fixture.
Twenty-three boats joined the festival flotilla’s two-night voyage through lake locations such as Warners Bay, Valentine, Belmont, Toronto, Coal Point and Wangi Wangi.
Floating nests of fairy lights putted at four knots alongside neon depictions of turtles, whales and other creatures.
The parade was exclusively for boats five metres or longer that could participate both nights, but onlookers threw balcony parties as the Lake Maquarie council organisers had urged.
“I think a tradition’s been started; they did a great job, these boaties,” the council’s cultural services manager Jacqui Hemsley said.
“Some real imagination went into the displays. It wasn’t just Christmas lights on boats.”
Voting for the festival’s boating prize categories, including best in show and the people’s choice award, will remain open until 5pm Thursday on the council’s Facebook page.
