Newcastle University Autonomy Day circus

ACADEMIC achievers better resembled class clowns amid the chaos of Autonomy Day celebrations yesterday at Callaghan Campus.

More than 3000 University of Newcastle students took part in the annual fun and frivolity that marks the institution's separation from the University of NSW in 1965.

Residential college Edwards Hall dominated the annual billy cart derby taking out the tag team, speed trial and overall award, the Halls Cup.

Autonomy Day marked the end of a week of suspense and intrigue during a campus-wide game of Murder.

However the highlight was the campus carnival where students got in touch with their inner child with jumping castles and games.
