IT’S official. Australian rock legends Cold Chisel will perform at the inaugural Newcastle 500 Supercars race on Saturday, November 25.

Cold Chisel frontman Jimmy Barnes and lead guitarist Ian Moss are in Newcastle on Friday where they will officially launch the highlight of the Supercars’ weekend of off-track entertainment.

Australian alt-rockers Spiderbait will also perform alongside Cold Chisel on the Newcastle Foreshore stage.

The Newcastle Herald first reported in March that negotiations were well advanced to bring the pub rock greats to the Newcastle 500. Cold Chisel, whose many classics include Khe Sanh, Flame Trees and Cheap Wine, have previously entertained motorheads at the Sydney 500 in 2009.

Barnes and Moss have both performed solo in Newcastle this year, while Cold Chisel rocked Hope Estate at Pokolbin in December 2015. However, the five-piece have not played in Newcastle since the Light The Nitro tour in 2011.

The Newcastle 500 will be Cold Chisel’s only Australian mainland show this year.

“Newcastle has always been great to us," Barnes said. “When we were starving in our early days, we would drive up there and fill rooms, long before we did anywhere else.

“We got to learn our trade playing to wild and appreciative crowds in full rooms there. If we owe any place anything, it's Newcastle.”

More to come.
