Policeman hit by car in alleged arrest attempt

POLICE have charged a 33-year-old man after a policeman was allegedly hit by a car at Wallsend last night.

Police will allege in Wyong Local Court later today that the man drove his Toyota sedan at a senior constable about 10pm on Thomas Street.

The vehicle allegedly hit the officer, who rolled up onto the bonnet. The officer was not seriously injured.

The man has been charged with multiple offences including leading police on a pursuit, two counts of assaulting police, using an offensive weapon with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, driving whilst disqualified and charges in relation to two outstanding warrants.

The man and a woman, 23, were arrested about 60 kilometres away on Wyong Road.

The passenger was charged with using a carriage service to threaten harm and was granted strict conditional bail by police.

A Critical Incident Investigation Team from Lake Macquarie Local Area Command has been formed to investigate the incident.
