NEW high-rise in Honeysuckle appears likely after the Hunter Development Corporation released a fresh patch of the harbourside suburb to market on Thursday. 

The former rail yards and cargo wharves at 35 Honeysuckle Drive – between the Lee Wharf car park and Steel Street –  will go up for sale in a two-stage process that will put design at the centre of buyers’ sales pitch.

It is the fourth Honeysuckle Drive site released within four years.

The harbourfront 5250 square metre site is zoned for mixed-use development.

Its proposed neighbour is the planned Doma residential development on the existing car park at 21 Honeysuckle Drive.

Hunter Development Corporation chief executive Michael Cassel said the site had the potential for up to 90 apartments, retail and commercial space. 

He said it could help drive the night-time economy. 

The site will be released in two stages, first through a shortlist of design and development teams before a second round in which the shortlisted firms submit offers including their offers and detailed designs.

"This two-stage process will ensure design excellence is realised in the built form, evolving the architecture and creating great public spaces will ensure demand continues,” Mr Cassel said. 

The first stage of the expression of interest process closes on 14 August 2017.
