Nelson Bay face a huge task to defend their Black Diamond AFL Women’s crown after a second heavy loss to unbeaten leaders Newcastle City on Saturday night.

The Marlins and Blues played the feature match of the Black Diamond women’s round as the last of six games at No.1 Sportsground.

The defending champions could not contain Blues forward Meaghan MacDonald, who kicked six goals in a 10.6 (66) to 2.3 (15) win.

City are now two wins clear of Nelson Bay at the top of the table.

Gosford, who beat understrength Warners Bay 15.8 (98) to 0.4 (4), are one win behind the Marlins in third.

Fourth-placed Maitland downed a spirited Cardiff side 7.9 (51) to 5.5 (35) after representative forward Sarah James dislocated her shoulder in the warm-up.

Emma-Jayne Howe kicked 10 goals in Lake Macquarie’s 23.20 (158) to 0.1 (1) win over hapless Muswellbrook.

Killarney Vale dominated Singleton 11.13 (79) to 1.1 (7), and Wyong Lakes downed Newcastle Novas 23.15 (153) to 1.1 (7).
