ROLE MODEL: Van Egmond on living her Matildas dream

Fresh from a training camp in Canberra Hunter footballer Emily van Egmond will head to America this week with the Matildas for the upcoming Tournament of Nations.

Van Egmond, who visited Newcastle earlier this month to promote the September 19 fixture against Brazil at McDonald Jones Stadium, was officially named in the Australian women’s squad on Monday.

The 24-year-old, who helped VfL Wolfsburg win the Women’s Bundesliga in Germany in May, will be joined in green and gold by Newcastle Jets pair Gema Simon and Chloe Logarzo, who are both signed with Norwegian club Avaldsnes.

Van Egmond was in the nation’s capital last week with Matildas head coach Alen Stajcic.

“It was good to get the Australian based players together into camp and some of the younger ones did well so that was really good,” said Stajcic.

“Players like Emily [van Egmond] haven’t played for six weeks while some of the others have been playing at a local NPL level for a couple of months so it was a chance to bring them back up to the speed and fitness we want them at for the tournament.”

Recognised strikers Michelle Heyman and Kyah Simon are missing from the Matildas squad as they continue their rehabilitation from injury.

Australia open their campaign against the US in Seattle on July 28.

They tackle Japan on July 30 in San Diego before meeting Brazil in Carson on August 3.
