A “disruptive” Hunter-based law firm will carry the hopes of the region into the Telstra NSW Business Awards.

Nexus Law Group, which is based in Newcastle but also has offices in Sydney, Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne, is one of six finalists in the awards’ new business category.

Category winners will be announced at Sydney Town Hall on July 18.

State and territory category winners will then be flown to Sydney for national judging on August 24.

Nexus founder Marcus McCarthy said it had been an “exhaustive process” to reach the final six of the category, which involved hours of preparation, following by shortlisting and presenting to judges.

Mr McCarthy pioneered the embedded contractor law firm model in Australia and is now its leading proponent and a recognised thought leader in the industry.

“We are honoured and humbled,” Mr McCarthy said.

“When interviewed by the Telstra judges we spoke about our recognition of the drivers for change and disruption in the legal industry.

“Our aim with Nexus is to build a business that is flexible enough to adapt to changing client expectations in a way that preserves and respects the practice of law.

“Our goal is to utilise technology to increase the services we offer to the market while providing a range of practice options to the lawyers doing the work.”

Mr McCarthy said Nexus was designed to connect a network of independent practices into one seamless operating platform, facilitating better client service and a better return for the lawyers who deliver it.

“The explosion of so-called ‘new law’ firms was a direct response to internal and external pressures on traditional legal firms and a growing recognition of the need for structural change in the legal sector,” he said.

“Nexus’s Open Law is the only practice management system in existence that allows independent experts to fully collaborate as one firm, so the client always gets the best lawyer with the right expertise.

“Our lawyers are recognised experts in their fields, operating from multiple locations nationally, supported by a central hub.”

The Telstra Business Awards mark 25 years in 2017 and are the longest-running program honouring the achievements of Australia’s best small and medium businesses and more recently, charities too.
