All the years of catching snakes and playing football must have paid off for Gabrielle Keaton – if keeping your wits helps you to win a talent and beauty contest.

The 21-year-old New Lambton woman was crowned Miss Multiverse Australia on Thursday night. She holds a bachelor’s degree in zoology from the University of New England, having been fond of animals from a childhood spent living on a property near Bulahdelah.

She also competed in football and cross country running throughout her youth.

“Gabrielle displayed qualities of great business skills, fitness and beauty,” contest director Yolandi Franken said.

The contest included sporting activities, IQ-related tests as well as catwalk events, including swimwear modelling.

Keaton, 177 centimetres tall, began part-time swimwear modelling last year.
