A University of Newcastle academic has been recognised at the Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT) for his leadership of the successful clinical program at the Newcastle Law School.

Shaun McCarthy, the Director of the university’s legal centre, was presented with a citation for outstanding contributions to student learning at the NSW/ACT Citations Ceremony at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney on Friday.

An advocate for innovative and multidisciplinary initiatives within the Bachelor of Laws and Juris Doctor, Mr McCarthy has worked to transform the way students think about clients and the law.

“I am passionate about providing people from all walks of life the means to access the law, whilst also ensuring our students have the opportunity to undertake important client casework,” Mr McCarthy said.

Mr McCarthy is also behind the university’s Law on the Beach program, which provides free legal advice in an informal atmosphere.
