A MAN is dead and a critical incident investigation is under way after a stand-off with police in Gloucester ended in tragedy.
The 63-year-old man died in Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital with burns to two thirds of his body on Wednesday, a day after police said he made “a number of threats” to officers and was involved in a siege situation.
Police said they established a perimeter around a house on Denison Street about 9pm on Tuesday after the threats were allegedly made.
Three hours later the house caught fire.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze but found the man suffering burns, police said.
There was no one else home.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter said the man had burns to most of his body when he was flown to Sydney.
Police launched a critical incident investigation to examine the circumstances of the ordeal. A critical incident investigation is launched when a civilian suffers serious injury or death in the course of a police operation.
