Red Shield Appeal raises $6 million

Australians have so far donated nearly $6 million to the Salvation Army national Red Shield doorknock appeal over the weekend.

While that total was six per cent less than last year, the Salvation Army's Major Neil Dickson said he remained optimistic the appeal would reach its target.

"Although we have not yet reached our total doorknock goal of $8 million, we are still very hopeful that when people send in their donations this week we will get close to our goal," Major Dickson said.

Major Dickson thanked all those who contributed to the appeal and said without public support, the Salvation Army would not be able to continue with its wide range of social programs and community services.

He also praised the tens of thousands of volunteers who helped collect the donations.

If you still want to make a tax-deductible donation you can phone 13 72 58 or visit the website www.salvos.org.au

Donations can also be made at any Westpac branch or by sending a cheque to PO Box 9888 in any capital city.
