PROPOSED safety changes to Stewart Avenue are open for public feedback.
The state government has allocated $800,000 this financial year for the upgrades at Kemp Street and Parkway Avenue in Hamilton South.
The changes, geared towards reducing crashes in the area, will add a 30-metre right turn lane on Parkway Avenue for motorists turning westbound onto Stewart Avenue.
The traffic lights will be adjusted to include a right turn phase.
At Kemp Street a raised concrete median will prevent motorists turning right in and out of the eastern side of the street.
“The changes mean motorists will no longer be able to drive straight across the four lanes of Stewart Avenue from the western side of Kemp Street into the eastern side of Kemp Street,” Parliamentary secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald said.
The environmental assessment of the changes are open to public comment until October 13 through Roads and Maritime Services’ website and at Newcastle City Council.
