THE Mattara Hill Climb will swing back into action on Sunday and Monday.
This long weekend’s race marks the second time it has taken place away from its spiritual home in King Edward Park since moving in 2015. The event had climbed through the green patch in the heart of Newcastle since 1951 but shifted to Ringwood Park Motor Sport Complex last year.
Publicity officer Rick Vincent said the MG Car Club, the event’s organiser, expects about 80 entrants from areas including Kempsey and Tamworth to hit the track on the weekend.
He said that while crowds diminished in the move away from Newcastle’s waterfront vista, the true believers had followed the racing to Italia Road.
“You’ve really got to be a bit of a petrolhead,” he said.
“The track sort of has to be seen to be believed. It’s still a great family day.”
Gates are open from 7.30am, with racing around the 1.2 kilometre circuit scheduled to run between 9am and 4pm.
