DSA more than just a job

For many young people, finding a job can be a real challenge, made even harder if they have a disability.

The disability services sector is experiencing significant growth driven by the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

The NDIS is providing new opportunities for people with a disability and service providers are offering more innovative and exciting choices.

Disability Services Australia (DSA) are committed to supporting people to live life the way they choose and one of the ways they do this is through personalised work readiness support.

For many young people, finding a job can be a real challenge, made even harder if they have a disability.

Dyani is a young woman who is working on conquering those challenges and is on her way to living the life she wants to live.

DSA’s employment programs are comprehensive.  They take the time to get to know each person – not just their barriers, but also their strengths, skills and interests.

DSA Employment Consultant Jeff Conn has been supporting Dyani to find and keep a job. After volunteering for six weeks at the Apollo International Hotel in Charlestown, Dyani was overjoyed when she was offered paid work as a cleaner.

Dyani is so keen to work she often arrives early for her shift and is incredibly proud to wear her uniform and name badge.

“As an employer, Apollo have been fantastic. They have been very understanding and accommodating of Dyani’s specific needs,”  Jeff said.

Now that she’s had some success in finding a part-time job Dyani is keen to find another and is working now on developing the additional skills she’ll need to work in retail.

DSA has been delivering a wide range of disability support services in NSW for more than 60 years and for more than 10 years locally in the Hunter. They are still growing and invite you to join their team.
